Key Requirements for the Approval of Additional Headlights

To ensure your Lazer headlights pass the vehicle inspection (ITV), you must comply with several regulatory points, particularly the ECE R48 Regulation and the Spanish Vehicle Modifications Manual .

1. Headlight Approval Marking (E-Mark)

Make sure your Lazer headlights have the European homologation marking ('E' and a number) . To be used as high beam or long-range headlights, they must bear the code “HR” (High Beam).

2. Light Points (Reference Value)

This is a critical point. The total luminous intensity value of all high-beam headlights switched on (the original ones plus the Lazer ones) cannot exceed 100 light points (or 300.000 candelas).

• Look for the reference number (e.g. 17.5, 20, 30, etc.) that is marked on the original headlight and on the Lazer.
• Add the light points of all main beam headlights. If the total exceeds 100, approval will be denied.

3. Positioning and Mounting

• Location: Additional high beam headlights (Lazer) must be installed in the front of vehicle.
• Ground Height: The installation height must be between 250mm and 1.500mm with respect to the ground.
• Maximum Number: Only installation is allowed a total of 4 long-range headlights (2 originals + 2 additional).
• Activation: They must be connected to the original high beam circuit and must be able to turn on and off independently to the rest of the lights (usually by means of an internal switch).

4. Auxiliary Systems (Only for high intensity LEDs)

If the installed Lazer headlights exceed 2.000 lumens or 55W of power and function as high beams, the regulations (ECE Regulation R48) require the installation of two mandatory systems:

• Headlight Washer System
• Automatic Height Adjustment

Many LED Lazer headlights are designed with a power output below that threshold to avoid the need for these expensive auxiliary systems, or are approved as "work lights" (for off-road use only, and must be covered on the road).

Steps for Legalization in ITV

Once your Lazer headlights are properly installed and meet the technical requirements, you'll need to complete the renovation. You'll need three key documents:

1. Workshop Certificate

• Issued by a authorized workshop (installer).
• It certifies that the installation has been carried out correctly in accordance with regulations and technical specifications.

2. Compliance Report

• Issued by a Technical Service for Renovations (Laboratory) or by the vehicle manufacturer.
• This document certifies that the modification (the installation of the Lazers) complies with all national and European regulations applicable to the vehicle.

3. Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV)

• With the above documentation, you must go to the ITV.
• There, they will verify the installation, proper operation, marking of the headlights, and that the total number of light points is less than 100.
• If everything is correct, the reform will be noted in the Technical Sheet of your vehicle.
